The Katadyn Hiker is a lightweight, easy-to-use microfilter designed for backcountry campers and backpackers. It provides safe drinking water in various conditions by filtering out harmful particles, protozoa, and bacteria.

Before first use, familiarize yourself with all components. The unit includes the Hiker Water Microfilter, an Anti Clog Microfilter Element, an Intake Hose with Modular Prefilter, an Output Hose with Universal Bottle Adaptor, and a Hydration System Connector.
- Unpack all components from the carrying bag.
- Attach the intake hose (with pre-filter and float) to the designated inlet port on the filter unit. Ensure a secure connection.
- Attach the output hose (with universal bottle adapter) to the clean water outlet port on the filter unit.
- For optimal performance, it is recommended to pre-assemble the strainer/sinker/float and attach the intake tube before your trip. Applying a small amount of lubricant (if provided or suitable for plastic) to the connection points can ease assembly.

- Locate a water source. For best results, choose the clearest water available.
- Place the pre-filter end of the intake hose into the water source, ensuring the float keeps the pre-filter off the bottom to avoid drawing sediment.
- Direct the output hose into your clean water container (e.g., Nalgene bottle, hydration pack, or other suitable vessel). The universal bottle adapter is designed to fit most water bottles securely.
- Begin pumping the handle. Initially, it may take several pumps to prime the filter and start the water flow.
- Continue pumping until the desired amount of water is filtered. The filter can process approximately 1 liter per minute.
- After filtering, remove the intake hose from the water source and continue pumping a few times to clear any remaining water from the filter and hoses.

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and effectiveness of your Katadyn Hiker Microfilter.
- Cleaning the Prefilter: Periodically inspect and clean the pre-filter on the intake hose to remove any accumulated debris. This helps maintain flow rate and extends the life of the main filter element.
- Backflushing/Cleaning the Filter Element: While the Katadyn Hiker is designed to be low maintenance, if flow rate significantly decreases, consult the detailed instructions provided with your unit for specific backflushing or cleaning procedures for the glass-fiber element.
- Filter Element Replacement: The glass-fiber filter element has a tested capacity of up to 750 liters, depending on water quality. Replace the filter element when the flow rate becomes unacceptably slow or after prolonged use. Replacement elements are available from authorized Katadyn retailers.
